Is it Excess or Personality? You'll only know the real answer when you go to sell the bike. Here's my take ...
If you take off the goodies and chrome that you can and sell them off via the parts thread, advertise/sell the bike for a good but fair price, take the financial hit and move on, then it was Excess.
If you advertise a tricked-out 45,000 mile bike on eBay for $55,000 because you have $65,000 into it ... that is 100% Personality.
Either way, the Forum members win because we get a garage load of quality used parts or a good laugh.
H-D ownership has many forms. I used get into mods, but my interests changed. I now find myself taking more trips and wrenching less. With the exception of a GPS, backrest and taller windshield, my bike is completely stock, including the factory pipes.
