Since you are carrying your daughter on your bike I suggest you put a sissy bar on the back of the bike. The Standard HD back rest pad is to wide for a helmet to fit over so I made a back rest that fit the outline of the sissy bar.
This allows you to sit the helmet on the sissy bar and strap it under the back rest. I built my own out of plywood and foam and had a local upholster shop cover it. Did exactly what you want and I had less than a hundred dollars in it.
I used this setup to take my son to school and it worked with no problems.

That's a good idea Texas. I don't have a backrest but it has the docking kit installed. I've seen some boxes on eBay for less than $100 but I'm concerned with quality. I'm trying to decide between a used tour pack or a backrest/luggage rack. I need someway for more storage anyway for longer trips but I don't want to spend$500+.
If your looking for more storage, the tour pack is the way to go. I ran across a deal on a OEM Classic Tour pack (With Lights) for $500.00 still in the box new.
I will warn you, Once you put a tour pack on your bike even if it is removable it will stay on the bike. It's just to damn convenient.
Here is an e-bay seller that is offering a Harley Davidson style tour pack with a 100% MONEY BACK GUARENTEE INCLUDING SHIPPING
He has 289 sold with 0 negative feed back.
Only A few thing I see that may or may not make a difference to you. Does not have a harley style barrel key lock. You can get the Harley keyed to match lock for about $35.00. Does not have the label plate on the lid but does have a place for it.
The one thing I would add is the insert to go in the bottom to keep things from getting scratched up. Or carpet it.
You will need the quick release mount from Harley or after market. This does put you in that $500.00 range. But it is something to consider.
I think that will be my best bet but I would have to get a mounting bracket too. I think I would need a leather pack since my bike is white with leather saddlebags. It's either that or a backrest and tbag.
J&P has this and a couple different ones , or even a cargo net would work just have the helmet sit on the passenger seat and strap it down , pretty inexpensive too. http://www.jpcycles.com/product/134-236
^^^^ this is your cheapest option till you get a sissybar or what else you want. I use one of these to strap my fullface down when I wear it to work on cold mornings but switch to my beanie for the ride home as it has warmed up and I don't like that a fullface cuts down on my peripheral vision and ability to turn my head quickly.
Or less expensive then a tourpak, get a backrest with a luggage rack (probably can be had from ebay cheap) and use a bag like this: and when running without your daughter, it cam be attached to the seat, and used as a riders backrest.
