Here's me on my brand new '07 EG Classic. Got it today. Woo Hoo!
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE IT! But after taking it once around the block, I have to say that I expected much more low-end torque. I didn't expect to have to twist the throttle that much to engage 1st w/o lugging. And it definitely lugs very easily at low speed in general. It's okay, but it's not what I expected from a 96ci v-twin motor. I'm going to needmuch more low-end torque.
I'm not looking for a hot rod. I just want the thing to PULL! It felt like driving a truck with a V6. I want a big torquey V8.
Is a big bore 103 kit, pipes, a/c, cam, fuel management, and a tune in my future? That sounds like $3000???
I have an 07 Street Glide with the 103 kit. They put a different clutch in there that makes you put alot more gas into it before letting it out. You lose that "easy clutch" feel that they started in 06. Depending on what you used to ride, you might have to get used to the clutch...
I rode a Honda Shadow 750 (small metric cruiser) for two years to see if I'd like riding. On that bike, I just twist til I hear the pipes and let out the clutch. Harley seems to wantmore rev's than that and lugs at low speed. No big deal. I'll just give it more gas and use a lower gear for now. Riding 2-up? Seems like it will be underpowered (under torqued???) for that. This assessment comes after only 1000 feet of riding, though...
Hope you have a Platinum card..... LET THE SPENDING BEGIN!!!
You betterup your estimate some... especially if the shop is going to do the labor. You won't even cover parts with that. Do it right the FIRST time. I have a 05 Ultra, did the 95 CI. It cost me close to $5K. Now I'm looking at doing something bigger... more power. Here we go again...$$$$$$ Call Head Quarters.. talk to the nice folks there. You will have what you want the FIRST time out.
IMO.....if you are going to do any boring on the 96cu......go to a GMR 107cu. and let the teeth pulling torque began. Coming off of a Honda 750 and "needing" more torque from the 96 stroker is something I find puzzling as the stroker will pull the eye teeth out of the metric 750, take it's heart out and show it to itself, put it back in, before it hits the ground. It's no pig and will pull 2-up without a hitch.
HQ sells the RevPerf 107" kits (the same ones GMR resells) that bolt right in and when combined with the right cams and possibly heads... you'll be popp'n wheelies on that new Bagger!
What about something as easy as changing the overall gearing? My Honda had an aftermarket sprocket installed before I got it. I've heard people say the Harley 6th gear isn't useful until 75mph, and I have NO interest in going faster than 80. Is a gearing change possible? What about changing the cam with existing jugs? Or is there "no replacement for displacement"? I want useable power in low-mid RPM. Doesn't everyone??? LOL
Clearly I'm a novice and NOT a gearhead. But I know what I like when I feel it! What do you think?
$3000.00 will get you started .Change the air cleaner and pipes and get a good programmer (PCIII or SERT) will be a good start. You might be happy with it just from those mods.If not, then get the big check book out and call Doug at Head Quarters or Steve at GMR and spend some money with one of those guys and there's no doubt You'll be happy then.
