Default Starter Troubles

I own a 1998 RoadKing that I allowed to sit for about (2) years. I am just now trying to return the bike to service and have found that at times the starter will not engage . The starter motor will turn but the gears are not engaging. When this happens, it emits a terrible noise. After playing around with it will it will engage and start the engine. Question, Can the starter be removed without too much trouble? Can serious damage result from allowing this to continue? I am thinking that something might be sticking and will get better as I use the machine. Also, could someone give me a lead on hardware ( latches and hindges for a tour pack ) Thanks!

Is your battery still strong? Does it spin fast or slow? Sounds to me like the battery is weak...

Check the stud on top of the starter...corrosion has a tendency to get in there and do weird things to the starter.

The starter can be removed...just some things must be removed. The exhaust is usually in the way and the exhaust on the dressers can be a PITA. I would not remove it unless only it is at your last resort.

Tourpack latches....are you needing a part number or what? You need a small torx to mess with those things. They strip out rather easily, so becareful.

I think HD is only place for latches.
On starter I would definitely check the battery and all connections.
To remove starter.
disconnect ground cable
remove left passenger foot rest.
drain primary oil, and remove cover
You will see a small gear sticking out on top of clutch.
I believe it is a 10mm head on the endbolt remove it and the gear.
You should be able to work around the crossover exhaust tube, but if not you will need
to remove it.
remove power cable from starter and the solenoid wire.
unbolt the starter and lift out.
mostly just time but not very hard.
really shouldn't go bad just sitting.
How many miles are on it?

I have 29K miles on the bike. The starter will spin at times but will not engage. Makes a hell of a noise when this happens.
