The greatest thing about a RK is its versatility. But I would never put a fairing on my ride or a tour pack, for that matter. It loses something for me, although I would like a set of color matched lowers...
I got a RK put too much money in chroming the front end, thus the windshield, but i did get lowers and a RK tour pak for those long weekends. With the quick detacheables it can be changes in a matter of minutes as it is with my different seats.....lots of different looks in a RK.
Expensive to do yes just because of the paint, but I did the fairing first then 2 years later the pac then 2 more years the lowers, I didn't think I would want all of these items when I bought the king. but that changes with time, its cheaper than buying a different bike, and doing all the mods I did that makes it mine.
I do my Reckless Fairing on my RKC just for cooler temp rides, then it's back to the windshield. It is the "King Of The Road".
Some folks say "If you put a fairing on, you will leave it on", but not me.
In the bitter cold, it helps keep the wind off your hands and such, but I look forward to taking it off.
Sure is nice riding with that shiney nacelle beaming back at ya...
I've been seriously thinking of adding a full fairing, although I like the look of a clean front end much better. I even considered a RoadGlide front end, but I think that would be a very long & expensive road to go down.
