I will say after riding mine around for a while, I like the detachable batwing for the cold, but miss that shiny chrome nacelle whenever it's on. I do put it on/off frequently. The lowers, however, I doubt will ever come off other than for cleaning.
Here are a couple pics of my "ultra king " I bought the road king with the hoppe fairing on it then added the tour pack with detachable hardware for about $2000.
The 2k was prohibitive for me or I would set mine up the same way...
I like the ability to change things on the Road King. I have so far 3 completely different windshields and frames, a $50.00 king tourpack from craigslist that needs a new paint job but works perfectly and looks good from 10 feet, soft lowers until I score a deal on hard lowers and a shovelhead era batwing I am trying to decide is worth the effort as it is rough. 3 sets of hardbags, 2 front fenders.
I started out on a 74 FLH with batwing and plain shield and have always liked the easy changeability of this style of bike.
The 2k was prohibitive for me or I would set mine up the same way...
If you are only concerned with cold air deflection, or even if you want to do it slowly as funds become avail, a fairing (no inner) can be purchased for $200 on the internet. Slap a leather fairing bra on it for $100 and you don't even have to paint it. Take off 12" ultra windscreens are frequently on craigslist locally for $50-100 so you can have a short screen for around town and a tall screen for the road trips.
Compared to the Road King windshield, mine makes the biggest difference around the hands and keeps the cold from finding its way up my sleeves during the long rides.
I was at Fast Eddies last weekend and saw what initially looked like an ultra, but come to find out it was a king! It had a ultra fairing on it and everything. Have any of you done this? I have a classic and it might look silly with a fairing and hard trunk but I would like to see others experience with this. How much does this kind of thing cost to do?
You mean like this. My 03 Road King Ultra Classic. The best thing about this setup is that I can turn this back into a 03 rkc in less than a half an hour. Total cost of all add ons about $2k

some of th comments say its cheaper to buy a street glide or ultra right from the get go,
but if your in the used market I scooped my 04 rkc up for $8200, add a dead center fairing with radio and thats another 1600. i think it would be still be cheaper to just throw a fairing on the bike?
maybe im confused on the prices of bikes. all electra, road glides, street glides are 12k and up for a decent lower mileage one
