HAVE A 98 ROAD KING AND THE SPEEDO STOPPED WORKING AS WELL AS THE TURN SIGNALS DON'T TURN OFF AUTOMATICALLY. ANY HELP??
LAST TIME AT DEALER FOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS COST 1200..
THANKS CAPT ROSS
What was the previous problem - $1200 is an awful big bill for an electrical problem - ECM go bad?? Have done any mods lately that have interfaced with the wiring? Extra lights? Etc.
I have a '00 Electra Glide Classic and I had an intermittent problem with the speedo going to 0, turn signals not canceling and the stereo losing volume. Sounds like yours with the exception of the stereo. I pulled the speed sensor and found that it was covered with metal shavings, very fine shavings. I cleaned the sensor and problem disappeared. I hope this helps.
turn signal cancelling is controlled by the speedo.
special reed switch in it.
So I would check the plug to speedo first.
Maybe see if you can borrow a known good one.
I had this exact problem a couple years ago on my bike.
Heres the fix.
Either you have a bad speedo sensor or a dirty speedo sensor. This sensor is accessed from the right side of the bike where the crossover exhaust pipe joins at the "y". Look on the top of the tranny, in front of the starter, and you should notice a small plug looking devise with two wires. Take a allen wrench and remove the sensor...no oil will come out as this sits on top of the tranny. Take some wd40, mineral spirits or some type of cleaner in a shop rag and really wipe the portion of the sensor that goes into the tranny. I mean really get it clean. Put it back in and tighten down the screws. See if that works. If the speedo works so will the signal lights cancellation as the signal ligts are auto cancelled at 25 mph (i think). If that doesnt work then you need a new sensor that cost about 100$ or so. You may have to get the HD shop to calibrate the new sensor but you can install the sensor after this is done. It took me a couple cleanings until i finally got mine to work.
NOTHING EXTRA AS FAR AS LIGHTS, RADIO OR ELECTRICAL EXTRAS..ODOMETER IS ALSO OUT.. BUT BIKE RUNS GREAT. GOING TO CHECK OUT THE SPEED SENSOR BUTLITTLE SNOW FALL HERE IN CT. DON'T EVEN WANT TO SHOVEL TO THE SHED.. WILL TRY EVERYTHING YOU ALL MENTIONED AND LET YOU KNOW..THANKS FOR THE HELP...
all fuses good..pulled speed sensor and cleaned it.. still no odometeror speedo.. don't know where else to look.. if the speedo goes bad is there a way to check it?? thanks for all the help..
