I have a 1992 flhtc eletra glide classic and considering installing a set of wheels off a 2008 streetglide, its my uderstanding this can be done by buying a wheel kit from HD, the problem i,m having is knowing which kit i need HD,s fittiment doesnt go back as far as 1992, any help would be awsome thx
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. Unfortunately you have been told wrong, those 'new' wheels will not easily fit your bike, for a variety of reasons, and there are no kits available.
Your current wheels have tapered roller bearings and 3/4" axles - the 08 wheels have 25mm ball-races and they are not interchangeable. In addition your brake rotors and rear wheel pulley have smaller central holes, so will not swap over. I could go on, but the swap is not feasible and is certainly not straight-forward. It may be possible, but will require customising skills and a lot of effort.
Harley changed their wheel bearings around 2000, along with brake calipers, rotors and stacks of other things as well. I have a later rear wheel in my bike, but that involved changing the swingarm and rear brake caliper as well.
