stopped by my local dealer who has been good to me before for things but told them I should probably be getting the cam chain tensioner fix done. Told me they would do the hydraulic kit upgrade and install a SE 203 cam for $1400 out the door. Seems like a lot and maybe I should just do the tensioner upgrade and not the cam, I just know that they're in there already.
Dealers are expensive because their labor is $85/hr for someone called a 'technician'. My independent mechanic charges $65/hr, and he is not limited to the MoCo's party line...he is able to think things out & have his own opinions.
Were I you, I would noise it around & find a well-regarded mechanic or three, & get their estimates. At the same time, I would also replace the lifters, & install adjustable pushrods. To me, getting all four of those done for $1400 is right where it should be. If the dealer is only doing the cam follower/oil pump/cam upgrade for that kind of money, you may be able to find an independent mechanic who will charge roughly the same, but he may also be able to add lifters/pushrods for the same price or a little med.
You could save a lot by doing it your self, had to throw it out there. If you have the money go for it, that doesn't sound bad for parts and install. Does that include a dyno tune?
