What is the best bang for the buck in replacing the stock speakers on my 05 Ultra? I am looking for drop in replacements, nothing super fancy that I'll need a new amp or such for.

IIRC, the 2005 model has the RadioSound head unit. I believe the Harmon Kardon started being used in 2006.
If you have the RadioSound head unit, it requires 8 ohm speakers. I rarely recommend Boom equipment, but if you don't plan on upgrading to an amp, those might be the way to go because it will be difficult finding drop-in speakers with that resistance.
If you have the Harmon Kardon head unit, they require 2 ohm speakers. For less money than the Boom speakers, you can upgrade to a set of Polk Dxi525's or db521's. You could even use the Rockford Fosgate P152's.
There are very few decent 8ohm speakers out there and your head unit don't really have the power to make much volume out of them. Ya may want to rethink not adding an amp. Ya could pick up a Rockford-Fosgate pbr and Polk mm651 speakers (front & rear)under $500 and blow most systems away. Lots of good stuff over in the audio section.

Just buy the best quality 4 ohm 5 1/4" speakers you can afford. You may want to drop into your local car audio shop and see what they prefer. I am partial to the Memphis Car Audio "M Class" speakers. They are awesome sounding and aren't really that expensive for what you get.

If he has the RadioSound head unit, 4-ohm speakers will ruin the internal amp over time.
In fact 4 ohm speakers are a bad idea on any stock Harley head unit! 8 ohm on early ones and 2 ohm on present HK ones. Infinity/JBL are both HK company's and have good 2 ohm speakers for late units but 8 ohm speakers are another thing.
