Default Given the choice...

where would you go?

This summer I'll be taking a ride to one of two destinations. I'm either going to ride west and through the Beartooth Pass or south to the Tail of the Dragon. I live in WI so the distance is about the same either way but I can't seem to make up my mind which ride would be more fun. I've been to Yellowstone and the Smokey Mountains in the past so it's not a question of going somewhere I've never been. I just can't decide which trip to take. No matter which direction I go I'll have some boring miles to cover before the fun riding starts so I guess I look at it as a horse a piece in that regard.

Please offer your advice and maybe some reasons you think one would be better than the other.

I like West.
Wide open spaces.

I have also been very appreciative that Wyoming is good about marking road hazards for m/c's ( such as from construction)

and that the WY State Police have been nice and let me off with warnings, when I really earned a ticket.

Beartooth, Chief Joseph, Cody, Yellowstone, Jackson and W into Idaho...the road stretches on forever...and that's where the Zen comes in.

Mike

I believe I would pick Bear Tooth Pass.

I've road the Tail of the Dragon and I would not make the trip solely to ride up and down a 11 mile stretch of road, regardless of how popular it seems to be. If you are taking a week or more to do it. You should consider getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway and once you get to the bottom ride over and do the tail of the dragon and then head back.

If not, The Bear Tooth Pass seems worth your time.

Good Luck!

Do both, if you can't manage that...I would go west simply because it is less crowded and has better riding IMHO.

There are much better rides in NC other than the tail of the Dragon (which tends to always be crowded, IMHO). If you're going NC, check out "the Rattler", "the Hellbender", Cherohalla Skyway, Foothills Parkway, and ride to the Smoke Mountain Nat'l Park. There's also a great route south of Bryson City (can't remember the name....I thinks its Hwy 76?....somebody hep a broth out on this one).

Any time on two wheels is a good time.....

I've been fortunate enough to have been across country and back three times over the past two years and I can't get enough of the West. I guess living here in Maryland like I do, I've been everywhere within 1,000 miles of here including the Tail. It's beautiful, but I'm for Beartooth Pass.

Very hard to beat the rockies (except Sierras). Tail of the Dragon may be the most overrated road in the world.
