So my stator took a dump on me back in Feb of 2012 and left me on the side of the road at 5:30 in the morning. Had it replaced and now it has done it again. Fortunately I had just returned home. Next time I went to start the bike, the battery was dead. Charged the battery and got it started so I could see what the problem might be and sure enough it was the stator again.
Anyone have any clues as to what might be going on. Surely the stator should last quite a bit longer than that.
How many miles have you put on in the last nearly 2 years? Not sure why you are having troubles, perhaps the replacement unit was weak.
I remember a HOG ride a few years ago and a couple with a side car had a stator failure on 50 in Nev halfway between hell and highwater.
They never seem to fail in the dealer parking lot.
I pulled the plug and put my meter on it. The stator wasn't putting out any voltage. Took it to my buddy's shop and he confirmed that it was in fact the stator.
That suck man. I see them go with that kind of mileage on them quite frequently. When you pull the outer and compensating sprocket see if there is visible contact on it at all. You might see that it arced to something or that the rotor made contact with the stator itself.
overload ( like trying to charge a dead battery OR a battery with bad cables*)
bad install ( such as using air impact tools on the comp sprocket, that can knock the magnets off the rotor and they hit the stator windings)
bad luck.

* some may remember my posts about a neighbor who spent $1300 replacing batteries, regulators and stators, when it was a $12 cable that was corroded in the middle

Well, that is pretty much exactly what I would say too.
If you have had two units fail in two years, you would probably be advised to do some troubleshooting before you invest in a new stator. It could be one of the above items or it could just be bad luck. Too bad it never tells you. Fecal matter happens!
..both air-bags went off?..that SUCKS...ooops...sorry, was looking at the Avatar....sorry to hear about the stator...had one go on me once, in the middle of the Harley Rendezvous in upstate NY, had to push start it for 2 days....made it home though..
