Was there for the 2013 Rally. Stayed in Deadwood Super 8 for just under $400/night! Ya ... for a Super 8! it was a nice stay and I'd go back.
It stayed pretty comfortable all night. Not cold. However, expect some rain. Sturgis and the Black Hills get some pretty good thunderstorms that blow through. One day, about 200 riders got stuck in the Hills by a hail storm. They had to bring in a snow plow to clear the road!

Spearfish is quite a little ride from the city of Sturgis.. Deadwood is a lot closer.. Rapid City is east of Sturgis and everywhere you will want to ride is west except the badlands.. If you have a small group there are reasonable cabins in Deadwood to split the price. As far as riding.. definitely Spearfish Canyon and then out to Devils Tower Wyoming.. on the way to WY stop at the Stone House.. and Custer State Park is a great ride.. if you've been to Rushmore its worth paying for once.. be ready for stop and go creeping travel in Sturgis.. its a total pain in the ***.. I've stayed at Iron Horse & Glencoe campgrounds.. both have cabins you can rent as well as the others.. and if you manage to go east there's Wall Drug & the Badlands, coming out the back side of the Badlands is a whole in hte wall bar that sells burgers & beer cheap..
So, does it get cold in August? My old lady thinks it will be.
best advice I ever got about Sturgis was when leaving in the morning prepare for the hotest day, a really cold day (actually evening, it can get down right chilly quick) and for hard rain. all on the same day. remember, everywhere you go, you end up a 100 + miles away. a lot of weather can happen in that radius over the course of a long day/night including mini tornadoes. there's a reason only 800,000 people live in the entire state.
The needles ride is awesome as well as devils tower. The rail road tracks ride is a blast. Just wander around south and west of I-90 and that is where the best riding is.

What did you think about Glencoe? We are planning a trip this year or next year. Our plans are riding and sightseeing during the days, parking the bike and partying at the camp ground at night. We here Glencoe is much like private property rallying ... that's what we are looking for.
