about the cheapest thing i have seen mentioned is the college in spearfish and the school of mining in rapid city. prices seemed very reasonable...they are just dorm rooms with showers down the hall. do a quick search and they should pop up.
The hotels are a ridiculous price around rally week, if you can even get one this late. I've rented a basement in a house a few times which is more reasonable than a hotel. Rapid City is about 35 miles away and still pricey. Best thing to do is get on the web site and message board to check for lodging.
As for rides, my favorite ride was Spearfish Canyon. Have fun and ride safe.

...I had to go to the area to work when the rally was on.
room rates for our 8 rooms were $365 a night each, minimum 4 nights.
the luxurious HI Express.
if you want a hotel, book now, see what you can get.
some of the campgrounds have cabins they rent.

I go to Sturgis every year and I stay on a military base (I'm retired military).
I rode with 5 guys from Minnesota last year and they rented a cabin and split it 5 ways. I thought they said for 6 nights it cost them $400 each.
Kinda funny, the gal that they rented it from said she'd stock in the first nights grocercies, asked them what they'd like. They asked for two dozen eggs and 5 cases of beer.
Go to SturgisRally.com or something like that and click on the lodging link. Yeah motels are terrible in price during the rally.

I too am looking for lodging and the college dorm sounds ok with me. dan conner, how can I find out more about them? I checked their site and can't see where to inquire about them. Any ideas?

Rooms in the area are really expensive around the rally. Just keep checking the web site to see if you can find a deal. Needles highway and Spearfish Canyon are a couple of nice rides, they are nicer to do just before the rally, not as many riders on them

Had to wear long sleeves, helmet, vest, gloves, boots, this for driving a 1/4 mile into the base, the price was nice, room clean, roomy, breakfast, was cheap, nice. good and bad, but that's just the way things go these days!
