Unless you are very lucky most buyers prefer to buy a bike that looks reasonably close to stock and a dealer's customers will be even more keen!

If the dealer is asking for your bike and $12,000, I'd say this is a good deal.

KBB shows retail value of an '09 Street Bob at $9625. NADA shows $9845. This is consistent with what I see in the classifieds.

I'm not sure you'd do any better selling on your own. Also, you'd lose the tax savings you get in a trade.

Take the parts off, sell them yourself, and trade the bike.

Between what you save on not paying taxes on the trade value, and the $$ you'll make on selling your parts, that will be greater than selling your bike as is privately, I'd wager, and you get to swap bikes out asap, vs. having to wait for the "right" buyer to come along..

My $0.02 anyways..

Make sure when you do the math that u realize when you trade u only pay the difference in
tax. If you sell outright you pay tax on total amount.

Keep your bike and rent a touring bike for the few times you may want to go on a longer trip. 1,000 miles a year is nothing.

Prob the best advice.

What's a street bob sell for? Like 16k? Add "I'm making it mine", for like 2K or so. So 18k. You're getting like 9800 for it, say 10K.
So take 8K and throw it out window. Now what did owning the street bob cost you in the end? $8000 for 4000 miles = $2 a mile.

So rent a touring bike: Like 150 bucks or something, unlimited miles.
$8000 / 150.00 = 53.

For the money you are throwing out (by selling), and since you only do low miles anyway, you could rent a touring bike 53 times AND still have your Street Bob to do another 4000 miles in the next 5 years.

Something like that. I've been drinking.

Of course you COULD buy the SG and end up doing 150,000 miles on it or something... that would be choice.

I tried to sell a low milage 5 year old pickup last year. I was asking 17k and I heard more hard luck "are you sure you couldn't take....." or...

"how about taking my boat in trade......"

After the 3rd time of making arrangements to show the truck and the person didn't show up, I cut my losses and traded it in. I got $1000 less than I was asking (which was about $500 more than I was willing to take) on the open market and actually what I'd been through I felt it was worth it.

Seems like less than 10k and the open market is ok, you get above that and pickings get pretty slim and the goofballs stand in line to waste your time.

Also in my state you only pay tax on the difference between the trade in and the new vehicle.
You are so right I would much rather trade in than deal with 1/2 the freaking lunatics out there coming to your house. My 1st bike when I started riding again was a kawi 900 the Harley dealer wouldn't take it in trade so I ebayed it rather than run a local ad.

I was wondering if you guys think I am getting a decent deal.
My Street Bob has 4000 miles on it, Black Vance & Hines Big Radius (2 into 2) pipes, Fuel Moto Micro EFI Tuner with their Pro Billet Stage one Intake. Burley Slammer rear suspension, Burley 14" Apes, Forward Controls. The bike is in great condition.
The local Harley dealer is giving me a trade for a standard Street Glide in Vivid Black of $12000 out the door.
Does anyone think I should just sell on ebay, or take the trade.
Just do it you know you are going to do it anyway
