The problem I found was that the kit I got came with instructions/spacers for my 06 FLHT/Iand other models and no clear distinction of which parts to use for my installation. I recommend looking at and taking pictures of a bike that already has the hardware installed with the saddlebags removed, sure made it easier for me.

Somewhere in the past I have read that the detachable hardware is a difficult, or complicated, install for the current model Road Kings. I have an "06 Road King Classic and am wondering what makes this project tough to do at home and if there are any tips/tricks for the do-it-yourselfer?
Thanks!

Type in (detachable docking kit) in the search window and you will get a lot of hits including some tips that I wrote a year ago. The destructions are total crap including some of the torque values. Good luck and there are a lot of tips on this in the archives.
I did mine and glad no problems. Took about three hours. Now any time i want too I can take the bike off the sissy bar. But it sure looks funny riding the bitch bar down the street.
I don't know what it is about Harley's instructions that make them so hard to follow, but they are. And I'm glad to see it's not just me.

In the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", author Robert Pirsig is a technical writer and shares some insights on the quality of assembly instructions. In a nut shell it goes like this. The tech writer shows up at the plant, and meets with the foreman who has a small crew. Who does the foreman select to help the writer...hint, it's not his best mechanic.
I agree with most everyone here. It's not that difficult, unless you try to follow the directions. Now that I've done it, it would be easier if I had to do it again.
Thanks to all who replied to my original question. Tons of great info and advice. There are some excellent pictures and instructions under "Cussing Hd" on another thread as well. It appears the author should be producing the instructions for most of HD's add-ons. My local dealer says they will install for 2 hours labor.....sounds like a deal to me!
