hello all. my 2000 ultra with MM efi just shut off on a ride. since I have replaced cam sen, crank sen, ecu. still no spark no fuel. cranks fine and hear pumps pumping. any advice welcome
My 2000 Ultra (at 77,000 miles or so) started "shutting off" and also "not starting", occasionally, but I never knew when or where it may happen.
I was on a 500 trip with some friends and it never quit running, and only once was it hard to start at a service station
The following week it quit just after I left my cousin's house and it made it all the way home (almost) and quit again within 1/10th of a mile from my house.
After sitting there for about 5 minutes, it finally started and I got it to my garage.
I got it on the trailer the next day and took it to the dealer and of all the things I thought it could have been, wasn't.
It turned out to be a defective "kill" switch!!
Not cheap...but it could have been much worse.
The problem with the MM EFI system these days is finding OEM parts.
Mine starting an erratic idle and spittering and sputtering when trying to maintain a constant RPM/Speed.
After checking and replacing other stuff (including a TPS and an ETS) the bike finally "coded" a bad ECM.
Had to go with an aftermarket ECM and the bike ran OK, but it never really started as good as it did with the OEM ECM.
I hope your problem is simple but if it turns out to be the MM system, I think I'd check into an aftermarket system.
thanks for input! I have replaced all relays with HD replacements, new battery, taken out powercomander and bike ran for 5 miles then nothing. compression good, cam sens showing volts , checked for spark (none)with compression, plugs dry, fuel pump makes noise. still no spark or signs of fuel? would bike crank with bad kill switch?
If you've got a service manual, i would start in troubleshooting about no spark or fuel and go from there. to me it sounds like an ECM problem or a loose connection somewhere. ...Look under the right side panel where the fuses are and remove the ECM from the frame so you can see the connector that plugs in. Had my connector come loose which caused all sorts of problems. the little wire bail that snaps on the connector and holds it down, had come loose and the connector had come off the ECM by about a 1/16 of an inch.. put it back on with dielectric grease and had to use a small rubber mallet to knock it back down so the bail would snap on. wouldn't think that would cause a problem but I guess it came up just enough to not make good contact. it should not turn over with the kill switch off.
My 05 Heritage did basically the same thing and I could flip the kill switch a few time off and on and it would run fine until it happened again may be 5 miles or 500 miles.
You've already addressed several variables, and there are so many more, so I'd recommend that you end the frustration and get it into a mechanic... very likely a quick and easy fix for them...Best advice right there for ya...
thanks guys. believe it or not, I have had my bike in a shop with HD trained mechanic. the dude couldn't fix, sent bike and me home. charged me no labour. decent I thought. now its at another reputable HD wizards shop. and we are both scratching our heads! got to be something simple, a dead short or something? but would it crank and make right sounds? have run manual trouble shoot procedure. hummm. I will report back. thank god it snowing
