'02 road glide. started it up and after a bit of idleing the starter motor kicked in. shut it down, now when the ignition is turned on the bike fires right up without hitting the starter. took the right side controls apart, sprayed with electrical cleaner....looked for obvious probs found none. problem continues. sometimes i can turn the ignition on and just wait.....a few seconds later it fires up, no start button pressed...... i'm assuming i got a bad switch anything else i might look for? thanks, dave.
Starter relay that you energize when you hit the button could be stuck, I know this from experience with fuel boost pump relays in the aviation industry. I think it will be located by the top aft left of the battery and is identifiable by the heavy green wire. They say you can substitute the brake relay that is next to it for trouble shooting purposes. This info all came out of my manual for my 99, I hope this helps!
Davewear... I had a '85 Liberty FLHTC. After several years of chasing electrical gremlins, I gave up and even though I love that bike, had to sell it as it was to unreliable. I had some really good HD wrenchers scratch their heads in wonder and say what was happening after they "fixed" it could not be possible. Sorry I am no help to you, but do relate to whay you are saying. When I went to get another bike I avoided the "fairing gremlins" and went to a Road King...just because of may past experience in that fairing. Yours is one of those things that unless you experience it, it is hard to believe....
yup good probability...starter relay....low batt..to maintaine 12v to the relay......maybe nothing to do with the switch housing....this is from past experiences.....BC
awesome! replaced the starter relay and all is well......this forum a shop manual and decent tools is all ya need ta keep ya from the scary HD service department
