I installed the biketronics head unit and speakers and everything works fine. I bought a used amp, its the biketronics 454, and I get a hum from the speakers. No matter what source I use, it still hums. Only thing I can think of is my ground is bad.
I cannot seem to find the screw they use on the biketronics website. Does anyone now any other reason for the hum or what an acceptable ground would be?
basic trouble shooting says that if the input to the amp is disconnected, and you have a hum with motor off, then you need a good ground- a ground not only gives the - power a place to go, but it provides shielding to the amp chassis from radio frequency interference.
so if clean...start motor...if still clean, then connect input to amp.
if dirty, ensure that the cabling for the amp inputs is shielded, do not run music cabling ( which is AC voltage) adjacent to motorcycle wiring which is DC power and can induce hum.
if wires have to cross, cross at right angles
Remove the right side cover. Tucked up near the frame their is a bolt already there that you can un-do and put your ground wire on the bolt then tighten it back down.
Just fish the wire from the top down. Should only have to remove the seat and right side cover.
