ill give u my experience with basically the same set up you have. The first thing i did with my 2013 Ultra was aad xied,s to the totally stock bike. Nice improvement. Bike ran much better. Better accel. Smoother idle. Very impressed. 3 months later i added a Ness Big Sucker air cleaner. Slight improvement in throttle response but still heading in the right direction with bike improvement. Few days ago i added slipons. Went with Fuel Moto Pro touring slipons. again nice improvement. great sound. More throttle response Point is with a stage 1 upgrade, xied,s work just fine and i got them on this forum for 40 bucks.
Hit 51 degrees yesterday so I took the bike out to see how it worked.
1st observation was sound-the smaller baffles with intact wrap definitely toned down the exhaust.
2nd observation-no more backfiring. Nothing. Not once.
3rd observation-decrease in performance, but a smoother, steadier application of power. It appears my old tuner was just dumping a lot of fuel in to the engine. A hard twist of the throttle, and the bike jumped. It also gurgled and backfired ALOT.
So now, my seat of the pants test reveals a smoother, steadier acceleration, and a quieter, more livable exhaust tone.
Disclaimer: While 50 feels like a friggin heat wave, it is still cool to ride in. I used a 3/4 helmet as opposed to a 1/2 helmet that I normally wear. That may have changed the perception of the exhaust tone.
I appreciate all the posts with your experiences and recommendations.
