Default Tour Pack Tether

Went out this morning to load up for work and opened up the TP lid and it went right on over........the retractable tether I put on a year and a half or so ago broke. Heart sank a little thnking the side of the TP might of cracked but the hinges caught it ( premium hinges that is) and no damage. So I guess I just wanted to mention that those tethers can let go, retrtactable or not and might should get replaced or at least looked at every now and then.

Good to know, I just put one on my Ultra. When installing it the thought crossed my mind that it would eventually happen.

Thanks for the heads up. I installed the retractable one on my 2012. Also installed the premium hinges and latches.

My buddy broke two or those retractable tethers. He just got the stock one back on. A new TP lid is pricey as the first time it broke his lid busted too. Stick with stock.

Default Sometimes Less Is More

You're not the first and undoubtedly won't be the last. I don't even "trust" my stock cable, hence I ALWAYS open it up carefully. Lots of posts in here about the retractable ones breaking. Sometimes less is more!

My bike has a strut the previous owner put on it. Just a two piece bar with a rivet as a hinge in the middle to fold. I like it and doubt it will ever break. I don't know who makes them.

I went to the parts counter at my HD dealer last year and told them I wanted to buy the retractable tether for my tourpak.

He said we don't sell them and don't stock them.
Too many people complaining of them breaking and snapping off the lid.

He said he'd order me one if I really wanted it, but would highly discourage me from buying it. I passed.

I'm still using the stock cord and also a back up cord made from parachute cord. If one decides to let go, there's a backup. Always pays to be pro-active......
