polyfill melting ?
i know alot of touring guys are running their speakers wrapped in polyfill, but i was reading where a guy had his radio on and the polyfill melted across the contacts of the speakers. first time i've ever heard of this. i have been using polyfill from an old pillow with no problems for two years without incident. i even tried to set fire to the polyfill just to see if it would burn, no luck. just wondering what was going on here. i thought more people would see this here or i would have posted it over in the audio section.
hmm, I deal with speakers- it's my job.
speaker voice coils rarely "short", they are more likely to go "open" that is the wire in the voice coil burns through at some point of the 20 feet or so of wire which makes up the voice coil, and the whole thing stops working.
It IS possible that he had some kind of coil/capacitor passive crossover/filter network ( these are an inexpensive way to filter out low frequencies from tweeters
these turn excess power into heat, which is usually easily dissipated to the air. but if wrapped in insulation could burn.
i had a couple of Altec A7/ Voice of the Theaters burn up this way 40 years ago.
