Default Transmission / primary oil - change intervals

Service manual say a change every 5,000 miles. For some reason, I thought the intervals were longer for draining and changing?

My bike's maintenance schedule requires a change of the transmission lubricant every 15,000 and the primary chain case every 10000. The maintenance schedule also calls for engine oil and filter change at 5000 miles.

I don't obsess over this and usually hit everything around 4-5K.

In some bikes the primary oil gets dirty fast, which could mean you need to change it when you change engine oil. The way I look at it is that oil is cheap compared to expensive repairs, so why risk it? I change all three holes every 5K.

what bike do you have? my service manuals, since 2007, have all said engine at 5k, primary at 10k and transmission at 20k.

i change my primary at each engine oil change, and with the clutch adjustment, it feels like a new bike every time.

change tranny at 10k, only because it's easy to remember to do it every other time.....

I keep it simple...when the odo rolls up on a number with four zeros behind it, I change the primary and tranny. I change engine oil with SYN-3 every three thousand. I'm from the school of thought that the real enemy of oil is dirt and other nasty stuff that gets into it, so I feel better at three grand.

I believe the OP knows what the service manual states, hes wanting everyones opinion and intervals. Me: 3-3500 engine, 2k Primary and 4-6k on Tranny. It's my bike and I'll do as I please. Primary splashes unfiltered oil around a powder keg compartment and the condition of the oil at just 2k reveals that. The tranny stays pretty clean so the interval even at 5k looks pretty good. The engine oil starts looking spent and watered down by 3000-3500 so that's when I change it.
