Riding with sciatica
Yes,taking PT 3 times a week.Been out of work since Nov.4th.Is a lot better than then but now comes and goes unexpectedly and sometimes laying in bed at night hurts. Today is really biting at me and I hope it's not from riding the chop about 100 miles yesterday (It's got a sprung/narrowed police solo and softail frame w/13" apes) .Seems to be more pronounced after a couple of hours on the RK (as was last week).Starting to look at those inversion tables-getting desparate.
Got two herniated disks. One in the neck, one at S1. Currently taking the supplement below. Seems like it may be working. The stretching exercises you learn in re-hab will help tremendously. Strengthen your core and loose the gut if you got one......(I lost mine then found it again
) Travel with the prescription drug indomethacin. It works wonders but is a really "bad for you med". Only take it with a meal. Only take it when you have to. Don't take it any longer than you have to.
Below is a link for the planking exercise to strengthen your core. If you are typically out of shape, this looks easy but it gets harder really fast. Good, fast exercise.

I've had the same experience as joesride above. I bought the Teeter inversion table advertised on the TV infomercial. It works! 2-3 minutes of stretching on the table before beginning strenuous tasks and another 2-3 minutes following is also a great help in addition to the regimen he described. Before I retired, I had an hour commute each way and sciatica was a real problem. Using the table first thing in the morning and before going to bed put an end to my chiropractic visits and pain.
I dealt with it for years. What works for some doesn`t work for others. Lots of good suggestions here. For me, nothing worked and it kept getting worse. I had a couple pinched nerves due to bulging disc and some other (over 50) issues. Finally had surgery on october 9th. Walked out of the hospital a new man and been pain free ever since. I would use surgery as a last resort but for some it`s the only option. good luck
Better seat, Apes, rider backrest, circulator pads....stop and stretch often.... When i know i am gonna take a trip i take prednisone ,,, i do the predni pack for 5 days, starting about 3 days before i leave... if i just ride around i stop often and stretch...
Reading through here I'm a little surprised not to find someone whose experienced my problem and cure. I'm 66 and had lower back pain for years. It became more and more annoying with hard work....like shoeing a horse or stacking hay. I just popped motrin when it got real bad and gritted my teeth. Got to where it ached all the time, especially in the mornings. Shortly after my 65th birthday and after getting on Medicare, I had a specialist order me an MRI and he pinpointed the trouble as a degenerated lumbar disk all roughed up with arthritis. A nerve running out of that crumbly disk was be irritated as it was stretched and pulled during my work day. He suggested a spinal block. All they do is send an x-ray guided needle down to that trouble spot and shoot in some lubricant and junk to numb the pain. They done it as an out patient. Took 15 minutes. I got instant relief. For three months until the stuff wore off my back made me feel like I was back in high school. Medicare and my AARP supplement paid for 100% of the cost, and I've had my second injection with the same results. I'd suggest to anyone he ought to look into this procedure. According to my doctor, excerises could have made my problem worse.
Good Luck

I've had severe back problems since my tour of duty in 65-68. I also added to it with injuries received while a cop. I had to be cut from two vehicles because of severe accidents. I received all the normal back procedures and none of them took. My doctor advised me that I had 4 real bad discs. My L2,L3,L4 and L5 were bone to bone with no disc material in them. They said that the only surgery that I may have done was not allowed in the USA. He stated that he may replace one disc in the USA but I needed four and the only place that could be performed was Germany. HA!!Ha!! I had a pain doctor implant an infusion pump into my body that delivers Dilaudid to my spinal fluid 24-7 but I still have what is called breakthrough pain. I could not ride my bike and sold it with my doctors request that I quit riding after 50 years of riding. That lasted for 9 months and I purchased a 2004 RoadKing. I also purchased two air bladder type cushions made by a company named AirHawk. A true miracle indeed my fellow riders. I bought one large that is the shape of my seat and the other was a large 18"square that is known as the truckers pad. Riding with the bike pad is like sitting on a nice sofa at home. These pads are well worth what they cost. Try one and see the pain fade away. Best of Health to you Fairshake
