the diagnostic procedures have been posted 933 times, you can check the tech board; electrical
all you need is a voltmeter and the instructions.
ANY part of the charging system ( including the cables) which fails, can take out other components. Failing battery can take out the charging system too. can but not always, depends on the load a failing battery is putting on the system.
in future, the voltmeter in the dash is subject to inaccurate readings.
confirm observations at the battery...if you have a tender plug, you can meter there without lifting the seat

Thanks, I didn't think to look there. Was bummed my ride was cut short so I came home and pouted.........
Before you replace anything check all the connection associated with the problem. Check battery ground, regulator, stator, ect. Clean all connections and use some dielectric grease. I had the same symptoms, turned out to be loose battery ground cable.
I just replaced my voltage regulator. It was intermittant. Remove the voltage regulator from the bike. Start the bike and take your dvm and check the voltage on the stator plug. Put the voltage on ac volts for this test. You should have app. 20 vac pin to pin on all three pins. This is ac 3 phase power. If you have the voltage there then it will be the voltage regulator going bad. The stator consists of wire type windings and is either good or bad. The regulator consists of diode bridges which can be self healing thus the intermittant problems. Hope I was clear in my description. This is also dependant on you having a good battery and no shorts or grounds.
