When they are dirty? Depends on where you ride, dusty, wet, conditions, etc. When it get fairly dark it's probably time. That said, as they get dirty, they actually work better at filtering the air. I usually put about 12k a year on mine and I clean the air cleaner in the fall, along with the rest of my fall maintenance, before the bike gets put away for the winter.
FWIW my experience is 10 years using the same K&N air filter on a diesel engine (fixed air intake) washed 3 times and the engine runs like new after 120,000 miles. We have lots of pollen, very fine sand particles (Sahara desert?), insects and there are no perforations of the filter media yet. I replaced the Harley (washable) filter with the K&N HD-1508 and its fine for the way I ride.
