Default Where to mount Sirius XM Onyx Radio

I just picked up the SiriusXM Onyx radio for $50 and with the $50 rebate net cost is $0, just the subscription at this point. Now….

Where to mount this guy, does anybody have any pics or suggetions on where to mount. I have an 08SG with 3 pocket t-bag windshield bag, on the right side of handlebar I have the riders claw for an iPod Nano and on the left is the switches for my air ride.

Thanks,

VB

Dock is mounted on left handlebar using a Ram Mount. Wires run back into the fairing, where the antenna lives. Aux cable runs through fairing and exits at the right and slips into the face plate. Fairly clean. Mostly use the headset that came with the Ultra, but sometimes use ear buds. Good to go, either way.

I just mounted mine up. I got a kuryaken mount. The one with the ball socket so you can remove the radio and it clamps to the bars. All u need is the basic set up. It comes with a plate for the socket that has 4 holes that will line up with the radios base. As for mounting the antenna i made a bracket that i pulled the screw out of the one dockijg point pulled the washer off and use the hole in the plate as the washer. I wanted it to be inconspicuos. Ran the antenna wire under the seat up through the tank tunnel under the bottom of the fairing and brought it out through the gromet where the handle bars come through the fairing. Note not to use the cig plug as u turn the bars it will bump the tank. I lost power to my cig plug. I gotta get that figured out now. Looks lke my fuses were good. Maybe an inline fuse to it somewhere. Hope this advice helps. I dont have pics yet but if u pm me ill get some pics tomorrow maybe it will help you out.

I should add that I mounted a second cigarette lighter power socket inside the fairing. I can still use the outside one; for example, I can charge my phone while still having power for my XM.

That sounds like a pretty good idea. I was thinkin about buyin a windsheild bag and mountin cig sockets in each of the side pockets so i have one for my radio and one for my cell phone since gps kills it pretty quick. Do you have the socket thats inside your fairing hooked to a switch so you only power it up as you need it? Second would you have an idea to why i lost power to mine when the plug in for the radio bumped into my tank? Iy didnt hit hard or leave any marks on my tank it just bumped it and lost power to it instantly. Is there an inline fuse or anything like that?

My Onyx is mounted on the inner fairing near the volt meter with the heavy duty (plastic) velcro. The only downside is it's angled down slightly. But, I like it mounted there since it's out of the way, but still within easy reach. All you see is the Onyx. The wires are routed down through the right handlebar hole.

My antenna is mounted inside the fairing on top of the radio. I get good reception. The only time it drops off is when there are trees covering the road.

For power, I ran a cig lighter type receptacle off the extra leads off the headlight harness. It's switched power so it's on and off with the ignition.

No matter which mount you use, keep a close eye on the radio. With the vibrations from our bikes, the radio can fall out of the cradle. I run a black rubber band from the bottom of the cradle over the top of the radio and it's rock solid.

I can email a pic if you want.

Mine is hooked up to a circuit off the headlights - when the the bike is on, the circuit is powered.

And most of the cigarette lighter -style plugs do have a small fuse located immediately behind the spring loaded contact. Screws apart so you can check it. Most of them are not exactly robust.

Kuryakyn makes a fuel-door that fits the SG, that mates to a 'standard' 4-bolt mount. Ram makes adapters, along with others, that interface the 4-bolt to a ball-mount...

XM makes a direct 5-volt wiring kit for your radio. This can be connected directly to the battery, then run up the tank, inside the console.

Drill a hole in the console big enough to get the power cord through, under the fuel door (inside the fuel cap area). I drilled the hole near the edge and made a 'notch' out of it so I don't have to fit the power-plug through…just the cord. (See pic). Then, notch the fuel door edge in order to bring the power cord through the notch to the radio.

When you remove the radio, you can tuck the power cord back into the fuel-filler area.

The notch in the fuel door is not really an issue. Make it only big enough to bring the power cord through. File the edges to smooth them. It'll be unobtrusive (and the fuel door leaks around its perimeter anyway).

I mount a GPS this way, when I need it. Other times I put the stock fuel door on and just tuck the cord up (as shown). Also, I've got a short cigarette-lighter female plug on my battery, and plug the GPS power cord into that. When I'm not using the GPS, I loosen the plug so there's no power to the plug under the fuel door...
