I have tried the soda bottles, a gear oil bottle, foil, towels, puppy pee pads, holes punched and I still get some spills. Fact of life I guess. Each time I try something different just to spill the oil in a different spot

Don't give up on that orange tray thing. With the right technique it will work flawlessly. Slip tray under the filter. Punch holes in the end of the filter at 6 and 12 o'clock. Temp duck tape on first hole good idea. After filter drains, pull drain tray from engine case and loosen fliter with strap wrench. Maintain contact with oil filter gasket and engine case. Apply pressure on drain tray while removing filter with two punches inserted into filter end. It is important that when the filter gasket separates from the engine that the oil tray is snug to the case.

I don't change my oil till I get about 25,000 miles on it. That way I don't have to worry about cleanup and spillage very often. At 50k I trade it in for another.

Paper plate stuffed under the filter, no leakage on the engine or mount.

Paper plates can also be used for male/female/male 3-ways then recycled for oil changes. (AR15.com inside info)

Gallon ziplock bag. Wrapped around filter, twist loose & a lot less mess.

Do sort of the same thing, while on the jiffy stand I punch 2 holes with a nail in the filter (1 at the top and 1 at the bottom) I stuff a piece of cardboard under the filter so it drains into a pan.

When the filters off I throw the bike up on the floor jack and pull the plug.
