Once you move here and get your Harley registered, a lot of the typical DMV stuff can be done online. I set up an online account and DMV sends me renewal notices on all my vehicles cars, motorhome and Harley by email and snail mail.
For passenger vehicles (and gas-powered motorhomes, for example), after the first five-model years, you are required to do an emissions test every other year. The smog-test shop you go to will send in the pass/fail notification electronically to DMV so when you go to pay the renewal fee, you can do it all online and never even go to a DMV office.
And lets not forget, CA is the only State (that I know of) that allows "lane splitting"! Yeah the politics suck but I can ride to work year round in jeans and a T-shirt.
I am moving to California in a few weeks and I was wondering about emmision testing, I took the stock exhaust last yeay and put V&H power duals and and monster rounds, with a big sucker air. Do they check that stuff when you register your bike.
There is no smog testing for Motorcycles in CA. I wouldn't sweat it one bit.
Technically, by the book, If you are bring in a bike with more than 7500 miles, then it's perfectly fine.
Everyone mods their bikes out here... a lot of cops ride out here too, they are pretty cool for the most part. They can cite you for certain things if they pull you over for something else first, but generally, they won't.
Enjoy your 365 day riding weather and amazing roads (and legal lane splitting), learn the CA specific firearm laws and hide your non CA compliant guns if you are bringing them in - a good place to start is calguns.net if you carry.
