Default Drained Oil Amount?

A quick question about oil quantities. I'm in the middle of doing an oil change. I removed the drain plug and the filer and let it drain for over a day (waiting for oil filter to arrive in mail) and I only got three quarts out of it. Prior to draining and according to the dip stick it was at the correct level.
Anyone know how much is supposed to come out when you drain it? Does some oil remain in the engine?
Thanks for any help.

A little oil will stay in the engine, although not much. There will also be half a cup in the filter! I reckon you've got out about as much as you can expect - press on!

The filter holds some in addition to what remains in there. Sounds about right.

Its a dry sump system, not like a car, some will stay in the crank case and whats in the filter, so 3 quarts is about right, I put 3 1/2 quarts in and get about 3 quarts out when I change mine, your good to go.

Thanks for the quick answers. Getting ready to ride down to South Carolina from Massachusetts so I wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong.

Sorry to step on anybody's toes here but go here and make your own decision on what you want to do with the oil in your bike. Some swear it doesn't matter but you should decide for yourself. You can make a management decision sometimes. If nothing else you will understand the difference in capacity and what comes out.
