Default Shock question

This is NOT a which brand is better than that brand post, so no need to comment on brand preferences.

A simple technical question as I ponder the many different options.

Do the "new" Harley CVO-type non-air shocks fit touring frames older than 2009?

If so anyone know why?

All 3rd party shocks fit both the "old" and "new" type touring frame, but HD website specifies post 2009 only. Is there a reason for this?

I cant put my mind around what could be the difference. 3rd party manufacturues have 1 part number for frames 85 and up, so apparently the HD shocks should work on either frame as well.

I guess I should have asked where to put my gas cap when filling up or what oil to use.

Yeah, that would for sure gets some replies. LOL

Sorry, can't answer you with complete assurance as I have a 2011.

I have "heard" that despite what HD says they will physically work on the older frames.
HD does this stuff all the time though with newer parts.
Sometimes it is simply because they didn't "test" the part on other models.

I have those shocks on my Street Glide, and am really happy with them.
I can't say for sure they will fit your bike though.

they will physically fit the rubbermount frame back to the stone age ( I mean shovelhead FLT).

the "big" change in the 09+ 12" and 13" shocks was revalving for "rider comfort", the 09+ chassis does have a higher GVWR so maybe that too.

the "new" shocks would likely be an improvement, I'm watching my local classifieds for a set

I have heard (not from anyone in authority) that the reason they are not recommended for pre-'09's is that one side is for dampening and the other is for rebound. The left side is also sprung heavier than the right side. The later models have a beefier swingarm so it can handle this. They may work fine on earlier models, but apparently the MOCO doesn't want to put their name it.

We can help you now with shocks, but gas caps may take a little longer!

You don't tell us what year your bike is, but $tonecold makes an interesting point. The 07/08 models have a stiffer swingarm than the previous years, the similar s/a having been introduced 2002 IIRC, being stiffer and an all-round better design then the yet earlier ones. The current bikes have a seriously beefed-up s/a compared with all earlier models.

'Doesn't exactly answer your question...

We put he H-D Premium (spring) shocks on the '09 SERG, took the air shocks from the '09 and put them on the '05 SEEG. both work fine. If I come across a set of Premium take-offs at a reasonable $ then I will try them on the '05.

I've put 09 air shocks on a 75 FLH. So I would imagine you can make anything work.
