I put a stage 1 HD airfilter on my bike last year and noticed a bit of oil running down my timing cover but thought it was the oil from my filter. I took the ole girl out last week and rode her hard with some friends (90MPH) for most of the ride. and noticed a "nice" puddle of oil at the bottom of the rods and the inside of the filter cover. Needless to say, Im a bit nervous but I thought Id come out here and see what you guys think, Its an 11 limited with a 103.
More than likely oil blowby....it happens when you ride them hard sometimes.....maybe on yer last change you added just a but too much, been there done it....clean it up and check the oil and ride......
Do you downshift to engine break when coming to a stop? All of our 103's a work seep a bit of oil around the air cleaner....nothing to worry about, but engine breaking with higher RPM's seems to be the culprit.
Mine did that when I followed the manufacturer's specs on the amount of oil you should add when you change it - which, is too much. I emptied some of the motor oil and it's been fine ever since.
Possibly another contributor not yet mentioned is vacuum.
Not running the engine in a lower gear when you should, lugging or almost lugging the engine, riding up hills in a gear too high, can all lead to a low vacuum condition that can contribute to excessive blow by.
If you feel the other examples mentioned is not the cause, consider your riding style.
Operating the engine within a good range of power to meet the needs of the ride is beneficial to many things, and may contribute here.
And it costs nothing to try it and see if it helps!
