Wife is bugging me so finally got around to installing a backrest on my 2010 Flhtp cop bike. I bought the Kuryakyn backrest that flips forward so the driver can use it when riding solo. Too cold and wet to try it so will withhold judgement until then. The quality of the backrest & pad is very good but I was not impressed at the play in the joints where the backrest swivels forward. I trial fit some spacers until I found the perfect fit, it is a bit stiffer to swing forward but now the sloppy play is gone. I did not want to give up the police back rack as it is a good size and perfect for carrying an overnight bag but the top strut is in the way when installing a backrest. I modified the rack by cutting out the top strut and welding in a strut made from flatbar. Now I had the clearance to mount the brackets for the backrest but the spacers they supply are not suitable for a police bike setup so I had to make my own. Also the chrome covers do not have a cut out for the top hole needed to mount the backrest bracket so for now they will stay off the bike. Sorry, I wish I had documented with more pictures as I went but if you have any questions I would be happy to pass on what I do know. I sandblasted the entire rack and painted gloss black so no more chrome back there, looks different but I like it. Mounted everything but forgot to reinstall the air tank under the rack so have to remove everything again ##$%^&%^$#, yup, cursed a bit and had a couple beers to mellow out. For now I am keeping the air bladder but I am going to make my own bracket to drop the seat down then mount the seat on two, 2" springs and get rid of the air tank & bladder. I put 80k on a set of seat springs on a prior bike and for me that was as good or better ride then the air bladder, it will also drop the seat height so i can get both feet flat on the ground. I will post pics as soon as I know how.
Here is the link for the backrest, the brackets are extra and it is important to get the right ones as they come in a short or tall version. For my seat setup I needed the tall ones.
