Default 16" apes install on 09 Road King

Hey everyone

Looking for info, I'm installing 16" apes on my road king and was wondering if anyone has done the same and if so do you remember what length your clutch and brake cable is. I don't want to pay the jacket up Harley price and my dealer knows so they aren't handing out the info I need.

Any help would be appreciated

Peace
JB

not sure on the length. i would guess plus 6 or 8 in. i usually measure up first, but i would recommend going with magnum cables. top quality cables

First, you have to pick a set of bars. Because 16 inch bars can easily vary 2 inches (plus or minus) depending on brand. Bar width is also a very important factor. 36 inch wide bars need much shorter cables than a 40 inch wide set of apes. My generic answer is "plus 8" cables, given that I have no other info. Also, do you have cruise control? Make sure you order bars specifically for cruise control, if you do. Standard bars won't work on C/C bikes.

Just wondering why specific bars for cruise control? I do have it it's throttle by wire. I'm not sure of the brand of bars as they were off a buddy's bagger. We had to make some minor mods to insert the TBW but everything was nice and tight before being sent to powder coat. All wiring is being extended in house, I do have a clutch cable for the extended bars but it's clear and needs to be black. I see the break cable is one piece and must be expensive. The kits from LA Chopper for the 2 cables are almost $400 hoping there's cheaper ones out there .

Clutch cable is easy, Just slip a length of black shrink wrap over it and heat. Bam, Black cable!

Yes, correct. The TBW. The first set of bars we tried on my '13 were not notched for TBW. Notching them was easy, but the TBW would not twist freely inside the bars ( edit: I mean slide all the way in the bars). I ground as far as I could but there was NO WAY that TBW was going to twist smooth (edit: I mean slide all the way in the bar). So at least for me, I had to go out and buy a set of bars made specifically for TBW. That's how I wound up with my Wild 1 509's.

Ugh I see. So if I understand you correctly the part of the TBW that has the tabs fits into the notches and is fixed but the rest of that plastic cylinder should rotate freely within the bars? If so that may have been an oversight on my part because I thought it was just the outer most piece that rotates which is outside of the bars. This is not good news if so.

Thanks for the info...Going to make sure tomorrow they do rotate.
