Its time to change the clutch on the 08 FLHX. I'm leaning towards Barnett as I have heard good things, but they seem a little pricey. So I am not completely sold.
Should I just replace the plates or should I change the basket and springs as well with something like the Scorpion Billet?
I'd vote for just the friction/steel plate replacement. Go for a +1 kit. HD sells (or used to at least) a +1 plate kit and you can get them 20% off online. I've got that setup and have been very pleased with the feel of the engagement.
I'd also put the heavier spring in there too. It's pretty stiff on the lever at first, but it's either relaxed a little or my grip strength has increased. Either way it's not an issue.
the "steels" are easy to measure to discern whether they need replacement or not.
if they are heat damaged, warped, gouged or thin replace them. They usually last a loooong time.
I put a Barnett Kevlar kit in my HiPo FXR in almost 25 years ago.
still working great. So pretty happy with that. I use the stock type primary fluid in that.
Unless the bike is highly modified the Barnett or the stock style should be fine ( the 78 Shovel referenced above was probably a sub-60 HP bike, and I believe a dry clutch system)...just follow the instructions if the disks need to be soaked overnight etc.
while in there visually inspect the clutch basket for wear.
don't forget the disconnect the battery before opening the primary case
Check out Energy One BTXP-14. I never thought a high quality kit (+1) could make such a difference. I am very happy. Oh...service us also excellent...whether you buy direct from Energy One or from Belt Drives Limited like I did. Also just an FYI...my clutch was slipping and I expected to find worn out plates, in actual fact they were alright but very glazed...I was running Amsoil...Energy One recommends a good non syn fluid or Type F ATF which is what I went with.

I don't see anything pricey about Barnett plate kits! I'm happy with my kevlar plus 1 set in the original basket. I also don't see any point in replacing the entire clutch unless doing some deadly serious performance upgrade! Stock basket, plate kit and, if necessary, a stronger spring, will cope with most road tunes.

What are you basing this decision on?
Like stated before, stock clutches last a looong time. If you aren't running mods that push you over 100hp, you don't necessarily need a high end clutch/kit. Hey, somebody had to ask...
The stock clutch pack will hold well over 100 with just a spring and well over 110 with said spring and a VPC. I don't even like the +1 kits. Next clutch for me will either be another stock pack or carbon frictions but no +1.
