For bugs, I like to use 75% hydrogen peroxide and 25% dihydrogen monoxide. Just be real careful with the dihydrogen monoxide, it is deadly if used improperly.

Holy Crap!!! I think I'll stay with the Pledge Multi Surface cleaner. Not deadly at all!

It's really not that bad and I would bet that you use it and come in contact with it every day of your life:

Dihydrogen monoxide:
The major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
may cause severe burns.
is fatal if inhaled.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of Styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, product remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Check it out here:

Usually, the bugs are already dead on my shield.

Good tip for bugs - mix 50% water and 50% hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle, then spray and leave for 15 min. They wipe off clean afterwards with no scrubbing.

I have some magic mix of fabric softener and water, the proportions of which I have forgotten, that also works well and was all the rage on one of last mc forums I was on. I'll see what I can dig up on it.

Who the heck washes their bike every time they ride it??? Id have to wash it every single day. My bike gets washed when it gets dirty.... 6 or 8 times a year maybe... I ride it all year round almost every day (except if its snowing). Just ride the thing and quit obsessing.

As far as keeping the scratches out... You need plenty of soapy water, clean washcloths and dry it with a leafblower (not a towel or chamois). Give it a good coat of wax once in a while too
