On a few occasions now about 4 times Ive started the bike and got a loud metallic rubbing noise almost like the sound of a dry bearing but it goes away after a few seconds and does not present any problems. It has only happened after starting the bike when it is still warm.
The other day I was at a light in an underpass and I noticed a metallic squeak like something was loose and rattling. The noise would increase on acceleration while sitting but cannot hear it underway.
I thought maybe a loose heat shield or clamp but nothing presents when bike is not running.
So today I fire up the bike and get down really close so I could listen hard. It sounds like the inside of the Transmission is clanking like valve train noise, I hear this noise from the right side of the bike and it is really noisy at the trans door and pan.
60000 miles on the bike and the main shaft and bearing were replaced last year along with the comp sprocket.
1500 miles since my last service. I checked fluid levels and found it clean and full,
I hate it when this crap happens when riding is good
The trap door is another weak link on the 6 speeds. I waited too long (128k) to re build myne. It wasnt that hard and less than $200 for all the seals, gaskets, and bearings.
Unless someone on here can say a valve train type clatter coming from the trans is a normal noise. I am thinking it is a trans issue. Luckily I still have 2 years on my ESP Warranty
And I will get a rental
When all my bearings were worn out I got a noise at idle when I pulled in the clutch and it wasn't the IPB and I had a traveling vibration I swore was an engine crank problem.
Hey Stranger! Yes, take her in for ESP... I've had my Compensator replaced 3 times under ESP on this bike. The only problems I've ever had with it. The damned compensator is just problematic in the '09's I guess.
The most recent was the up to the minute final upgraded one supposedly. Got a new clutch, drive chain, rotor, etc in the deal also while they were in there at 102,000 miles... $50
In your case not the compensator, but just sayin... ESP all the way. I'd never leave home without it.

Hi ya Jeff, you enjoying retirement? Gotta get together. Thanks
Soft 02, how difficult was the rebuild? Mine has been noisy for quite a while. I'm fairly certain I have a worn bearing in it somewhere. Makes a lot of noise but I don't get any metal or plastic when I change the trans fluid. Thinking I am going to rebuild it myself.
