Default Troubleshooting Rear Brake Light

Just helped a buddy with a handlebar swap. Everything went pretty smoothly but we noticed after testing the switches all is good, except for the rear brake light when the rear brake is depressed. Turn signals, lights, front brake light hazards are all good. The tail lights work fine and the rear brake light works when front brake lever is engaged, but not when rear brake pedal is depressed. Didn't have time last night to look through the manual for the wiring diagram. Just perplexed because all the handlebar wiring works, and cant imagine the how that could have affected the rear brake to brake light wiring. Any ideas would be appreciated.

the rear brake light switch is a separate parallel system that uses the same relay.

check the switch itself.

this could be unrelated to the swap

I am think you already had the problem. Pull the two wires off the hydraulic switch at lower right in brake line...(follow brake line..mine is right at front of rear tire) with key on, join them and see if it works. The front switch is a electrical microswitch under the lever, the rear is a pressure switch. Either joined cuts the light on. New bikes with ABS may be different. However, would think the manual side of system however should be the same.

+1 on this. I just did this last night to test my switch. If you connect the wires and get a brake light then your switch is bad. $20 at the dealer.

I do a lot of city now. Both the front and back are on the third switch. First replace came under warranty. The third, I got the front on Ebay for $10. and the rear at AutoZone with a lifetime warranty for about the same. I'm not much on aftermarket but Harleys' surely must sub out to the cheapest China bidder for certain things.
