My guess is it's from the bracket, bolted to the frame, that a similar brake light switch to this part mounts to. Lower right in front of rear wheel. (Follow brake line back from rear master cylinder) Also a similar one on the ring clamp that attaches the rear rubber flex brake hose to the frame on the rear caliper.

I would check the tires. You may have pinched this screw in a thread and taken it into the garage.
The chrome decor under the passenger foot board is held by two of these screws (on mine). The tip of the screw is not used in this case.
Are you sure someone (i.e. OL or riding bud) isn't messing w/you? They could be watching your endless effort(s) to find the place for this unnecessary screw...??
