Which part? I was 15 years in the trade, I know about warranties (and what voids them)
Riding style for one...or would you prefer that Harley also dictate that? Drive train stress??? What a joke...if your wife weighed 400 lbs. and she always rode with you...can they void your warranty?? I actually took the time to call MOCO...they insist that the flag usage was not the entirety of the issue but a small part. Really??? Lets hear their story....I think it is nanny statism gone private enterprise.
Lets see if folks can relate too this scenario than. The flags are like a parachute hanging off the bike, or how about a bouy or a board tied on the back of a boat, and drag it or drag a downed skier behind. Can you see the added drag tio a drive train system?
In added response to above if ones wife was 400#, unless youre a tweeker that likes hefty women, you would be close to the same size. And yes you two plus baggage will have exceeded the maximum GVWR, and void your warrantey.
I would think that riding into a headwind would void your warranty as well then. Do not admit to riding into a headwind or your warranty may be voided.

If you pull wheelies and do burnouts the repair is on your dollar. A bunch of flags produce drag and this is a very different thing from having a fat chick on the back which does not produce drag as such.
I am not defending the MOCO, just pointing out that they are not doing anything out of the ordinary as regards warranty claims.....abuse is not covered...neither are many parts that are not designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. A warranty is designed to cover manufacturing defects and faulty parts, if what you do significantly shortens the life of those parts and is not an activity for which the vehicle was designed then no manufacturer wants to pay out....look after it and use it as it was intended is what they want you to do.
In response to the tiny airplane pulling the banners. 1 they put holes in banners once they get to a certain size to help reduce drag. 2 the banner is being pulled from a designed anchor point most likely straight back on the frame. Just like a truck and hitch.
It's not being levered against some home made contraption. The drag is pulling the back of the bike back and down I would think. Acting more like a lever than a hitch. I'm not nearly smart enough to attempt the maths though.
I suspect there's more to the story than just the flags. These news stories are carefully crafted to include only those facts that the writer wants you to know so he/she can maximize impact and reader reaction....and prove a point.
Very successful I must say...we've all taken the bait.
With that said, and based on limited information provided, he used the product for purposes/circumstances not intended or designed by the manufacturer. If I dragged a parachute behind my car for 2 years and had my drivetrain fail, I would suspect the auto manufacturer would be questioning any warranty claims as well.
Warranties are for defects, not for stupidity or abuse.
On another site, this article was posted as well. But having 7 LARGE 3x5 flags vs the small flags that attach to the tourpak are night and day difference.
What has not been mentioned (didn't see at least) is that his ESP is till good except motor & power train.
Same goes with pulling a trailer behind your bike. The MoCo will void your claim if you bull a trailer as well.
Unfortunately, I believe the mothership will win on this one. They have more $$$$$ then most folks could spent for a attorney!
Drag from the flags would be fairly constant, not like having a fat chick on the back. The fat chick theory wouldn't apply. Once you get that mass of woman moving she would stay in motion to a certain extent. A body (however large) in motion tends to stay in motion.

the flag does not act like a parachute....unless it is a chute that did not open. If Harley had a legitimate response to the story, we would have heard it by now.
