Here, with the bike level.. And simple as it is, most owners manual are confusing since it appears to be the top of the opening in their picture. That is a quart too much. Few ounces either way does not seem to matter but the more you have, the more it may bang going into low from a cold start up. If you do not like to hear that, just leave it in gear, pull in the clutch and push it back with your butt. You will fill the clutch disk break free from the oil film in about a foot or so. The 38 oz probably came from a bone dry virgin primary when they built it, unless your primary has been enlarged for more capacity.

You have a gauge on the primary side? I think you are confusing tranny with primary.

Wow I gotta get one of those gauges, that would take all the guess work out of it.

I read somewhere that the Clutch basket retains some of the oil when you drain the primary. This might be why there is a discrepancy in the amount of oil that you actually have to add. I'm guessing, on a new bike the factory puts in 38oz of oil, but when you do a oil change (primary) only 32oz comes out because there is still oil on the clutch basket that won't come out. IMHO

Not confusing. A lot of times you have to improvise. Don't look for HD to provide everything for you. I made my own gauge to use on my Primary. Filled primary with one quart and made a gauge to get baseline measurement, mark it, and now use it to get oil level when I open the primary. Simple........

Depends on the engine and bike. My 05 Heritage (88) takes 26 oz. My 09 Deluxe (96) takes 32 oz. My '11 CVO Ultra (110) takes 38 oz. SJ Ron
