Ok we confirmed it is the same o-ring as the oil and trans drain plug. Should this be something we should replace as a preventative maintenance item? Should we carry a spare o-ring, dental pick, and make-up mirror just in case? Reading that reference post, it seems like a real PIA to replace.

I don't think it is something that needs to be worried about too much.
Unless you disconnect, and connect that fitting constantly there isn't a real big chance of a failure.
Sometimes sh** happens, but it isn't likely to fail.
On the other hand, a spare o-ring takes up zero room in a tool kit.
Ok, I'm sorry i haven't posted for a few days but i'm now fixed and back on the road.
I followed the previous advice and rented a uhaul and hauled 265 miles to denver co. Took my bike into the shop and after it spending the whole day in there they found that the O-ring inside the quick disconnect was bad and it was preventing fuel from exiting the gas tank. ( quite a few of you knew this was the problem.)
They didn't have a new one in stock and neither did any other dealer in CO. I asked if they could pull one from a bike they had on there lot and they were good with that idea. They went into their new trade in lot and pulled 1 off of 1 of those bikes and put it in mine. The bike was fixed at that point. Today we hot the road and put just over 300 miles in and are sitting in loveland Co. If anyone is every anywhere around denver and need anything please see avalanche harley davidson. FYI they will also send a truck to come pick you up and take you to their dealership at no cost if you break down. They told me there was no milage limit and informed me that if i would have called them they would have come the 265miles and picked me and the bike up for free. That is just to awesome. The guys there where great.
Thanks to everyone who replied.
Thank you for posting the solution. It can happen to any HD bike with EFI.
