Default 2001 Road King Starting/Running Problem

All,
I went to start my 01 Road King and found the battery totally drained. I successfully jump started the bike with my auto battery. However, as soon as I disconnected one of the jumper cables from my battery, the check engine light came on and the bike quit. I started the bike again and let it idle in an attempt to charge the battery. Despite letting the bike run for 20 minutes, I got absolutely no charge on my battery. When I disconnected one of the jumper cables, the engine light came on with the bike quitting almost immediately. I think it may be a voltage regulator problem, but I have heard that there may be other things causing this. Any ideas????

Pull the battery and give it a charge (or just disconnect the negative terminal). After it's charged, reconnect it and give it a try. Watch your charging light or meter and see if it's charging. The electrical system is quite simple - you've got a stator (alternator), a voltage regulator, and a battery. One of them is bad and it's easiest to start with the battery. If it's the original, it's time for a change. Regulator would be my next guess and easiest to change. Usually, you'll smell a stator if it goes bad - kind of a burned insulation smell. Removing one of the primary inspection holes will reveal the smell. Good luck and help this helps.

If you have a EFI bike then the bike will not run or will at best run crappy if the voltage gets below 11v or so. I had this same problem, finally had to get a new battery from HD...117$ AUGGGGGGH.
The alternator will not charge a dead battery (dead cell). This was my original battery, not too bad for a almost 8 year old battery though.
