Find some friends that aren't sissies!
I like to ride fast....Most of the guys I ride with like to ride fast too.
The cool thing about it is....
I never hear any of them whining about gas mileage.
They never discuss the importance of looking cool.
They aren't concerned about whether you wear a vest or not.
They don't ever ask what color do-rag looks best.
They don't get too concerned about whether you wear a full face helmet or a beanie.
They don't care if you do or don't wear chaps, sneakers, t-shirts or whatever.
They don't trailer bikes that are not broken down.
They don't get too concerned over some guy with a badge not approving of their actions.
These types of people are getting harder to find in the USA....They're called men.
I don't make for a good parade rider holding up the flow of traffic. I drive fast in all of my vehicle. If the group of rider can stay in there line I'm rolling down the road no less then 10mph or I just pull away from them. Do as I say not as I Do.

The Op is really asking 2 questions whether he realizes it or not. I see most here are comfortable at about 5 over when conditions permit, me too. When in a group various things happen to slow down the folks following. If the leader is already going as fast as the comfort level for those behind, it is tough to catch up without going above the comfort level speed at least for a while. Comfort level for me means that I have always been far more afraid of getting CAUGHT than of getting hurt. I won't expose myself to a ticket just to catch up with the group. So, in order to keep the group together, the leader must go just a little below the speed that the the others are willing to go so those detained by whatever can catch up. If you aren't willing to run at a speed that allows those behind to catch up, then you are indeed in the wrong group.
How you ride by yourself is immaterial. Either the reason for the group ride is enough to compromise your personal habits a bit or it isn't. I don't like to hold up traffic BUT I figure every little town has a RADAR unit they use to balance the budget. I slow down for the little towns so they can balance their budget without my help.
I am willing to try riding with others but without exception, they don't do things to my satisfaction and there is never a repeat. Obviously, I am not a group rider. I pass people on the highway and they pass me in the towns, I can live with that.
I always make sure I am the fastest thing around me. I would much rather pass everyone than have them pass me. I think this comes from years of club riding. And I still love to ride 80 90 + inches from the guys around me. To me that's my kinda high. It used to be other things along with that to get high now I just love the rush I get riding in a pack like that. I don't get a chance to do that very much since I left that life behind. Now a days I ride back roads 5 over most of the time and we spend hours just wandering around. Sometimes I Hate living in pa but we do have ALOT of roads to get lost on.
Good lord, I've been going too fast. Now I think I know why I'm getting only 32mpg. My commute to work is about 1/2 on dedicated HOV lanes. There are relatively few cars on these HOV lanes. I have a new limited and it's so freaking smooth&fast that I find myself running 75-80 easily and have passed 'slow pokes' in the left lane doing 95+. I gotta slow down. Seriously, I'm going to work, what they hell is my hurry? My old ride was a '99 Road Star and anything above 70 was treacherous.
My wife and I ride hard and we've been told the same thing. On the superslab the point bike is doing 5-8 mph faster. Its not uncommon for us to be cruising along at 80-85 on a 75 mph highway. As long as your riding inside your skill set your just riding with the wrong group. Most groups I've riden with don't understand that if the point bike is doing the speed limit, the one in the rear will be doing under the limit. My wife usually rides point and she knows to go 10 over.....its not rocket science its just physics. Find a less timid (more experienced) bunch of riders or their going to take the joy out of it for you. I'm a firm believer in 'ride hard or stay home' or at least don't ask to join in on a ride with us.
I need a little help understanding that one. When I pull a chain, the last link is gong the same speed as the first link. If I am using a nylon rope that stretches, either the back end winds up going the same speed as the front when the stretch has reached its limit OR the back end goes FASTER than the front as it springs back toward the original length and then resumes going a uniform speed for the full length. If the riders in back stay with going slower than the lead, they will get farther and farther behind, not keep up. If lead has to slow for a reason not visable to those farther back, the back folks will have to slow down eventually, even if the lead has resumed normal speed. There also seems to be a constant shortening and lengthening of the group as no one exactly matches everyone else's speed. The last one in a large group is sort of on the end of a whip.

If you ever been on a large group ride with a bunch of weekend warriors you will get the yoyo effect fast slow fast slow it sux. It because you have those who just don't have skills enough to ride in a large group saftly.
