Default Do I really ride too fast?

All my friends say I ride too fast. I always say they are old (average age 55 - 60), heck half of them ride trikes and ride too slow but after yesterday maybe it is me...

Yesterday we me a new group and went out to Ohio bike week. The new group (first time we ever rode with them) had an average age of 35 - 40 and rode everything. There was crotch rockets, cruisers and of course Harleys. Lots of Latinos and even some thug riders.

Guess what? the new group wasn't much faster than the old group!

Normally I like to go 5 over if the road is clear and the weather good. So 60 in a 55 on back roads and 75 in a 70 on the slab. I hate having every car and semi pass me on the highway. I just don't think it's safe.

So how fast do you normally travel? Both by yourself and in a group.

I always try to go about 5 over myself. But I don't think I've ever rode with a group that did, usually 5 under or slower.

I tend to push it a bit myself. Don't want a LEO discussion however. As I have become more comfortable on my RK I find myself creeping up in the mph.

This do depend on the roads. South of me are lots of hills and long straight runs, gentle curves. North is the Ozarks. Up there some of the roads demand travel at their speed... which ain't 60 on a 55. I haven't checked my speedo with a gps for accuracy either.

If I am riding to ride and on a new road, slower. Taking the bike to town on an errand... 25-30 miles one way... I may be doing some zoom zoom. My bike just feels happier above 60, tho.

If it's 50 I'll run 5 to 10 over, if it's 55 I'll do 7 over unless on a good 4 lane then 10 over. Interstate, 10 to 15 over. We have some that run just like this then I have some friends that run faster on the back rds than on a good rd. I don't get it but that's what makes the world go round !

I always let the road, conditions and traffic be my guide. On the slab, I always stay with traffic or a bit faster, you know they are all above the limit. That's why I don't like the slab. Yesterday, I rode the backroads in TN and NC, not a car in site....what a ride. I took it down to whatever speed felt right.

Typically we are about 5 to 10 over. On unfamiliar roads we cut that back a little.

Find some friends that aren't sissies!
I like to ride fast....Most of the guys I ride with like to ride fast too.
The cool thing about it is....

I never hear any of them whining about gas mileage.
They never discuss the importance of looking cool.
They aren't concerned about whether you wear a vest or not.
They don't ever ask what color do-rag looks best.
They don't get too concerned about whether you wear a full face helmet or a beanie.
They don't care if you do or don't wear chaps, sneakers, t-shirts or whatever.
They don't trailer bikes that are not broken down.
They don't get too concerned over some guy with a badge not approving of their actions.

These types of people are getting harder to find in the USA....They're called men.

Good times!

I don't do group rides. I usually go 8 over in daytime, dry conditions. Slower in rain or dark.

I like to move faster than traffic, so you aren't stuck in blind spots, and you don't get surprised by speeders behind you.
