Just riding home today (2010 Limited) - turned up the hill toward my house and there was an ungodly racket from the engine. Got it home and found it happens in the higher rpm range. Used mechanics stethoscope to determine front cylinder banging noise.
Leaky lifter? Any other ideas? Bike runs normally otherwise.
When I asked about my noise here on the forum, it was suggested to check the lifters and inner cam bearings.
Good luck, the noise had me pretty freaked out, I though I had major problems. It is amazing to me how sound travels. I swore my clanking was coming from the top end, but the sound did seem to come from the left side, which makes sense since that's where the comp is.
check your front motor mounts if it's a knocking noise. could be loose compensator too! does it do it all the time or just when you rev it up ? heat shields, exhaust pipe and it could be cam bearings or lifters. start with the easy stuff first.
Thanks guys - I'll look into it. Lifters, valves, valve springs - all seem possible. I tightened down the exhaust a little - it seemed slightly lose - but not enough and the spec on that is pretty low if I recall.
Welcome to the noise chase group, many including myself, after awhile put ear buds and music in and just ride. If the motor grenades that's what I've got the ESP for.
I'm taking my '13 CVO Ultra into the shop tomorrow morning for the 10,000 mile service AND to have them "listen" to a sound in my engine that I don't believe to be a normal engine sound.
At 2800 RPM's, under low-to-moderate acceleration I get a sound similar to "lifter rattle". It goes away at 3000 RMS's (or so) and once, when the engine was really warm (in mountain driving) the sound continued until I shut the engine off when we reached our motel.
Next morning....the engine returned to normal.
I'm hoping that they can find "something" that we can get fixed so I won't have to worry about the darned thing.

Rest easy, almost every stock twin cam I've ridden has that rattle mid 2-3 then goes away. Mine did too until I did cams and gave the pushrods a 1/4 turn extra.
