I changed the oil in mine a few years ago and used Mobile 1 Synthetic Transmission Fluid. I don't recall off the top of my head how many miles I put on it since then, but I noticed the "improvement" went away this year so I changed it again a couple months ago. This time I used a 50/50 mix a SE Fork oil and type E (had it left over from a fork oil change). It improved the ride but as I was doing it, I decided this was the last time so I swapped them out with some Ohlins. But back to the original question, I put back in what came out (whatever the capacity is, I replaced what came out because I had no leaks and didn't want to overfill them). As far as type of oil: all of the above suggestions are great.

I would never put back in what came out.
From my personal experience there is no consistency in what comes out. In the 6 sets I have farted around with the amount varied from 6oz to 12oz.

One fellow did the following = filled the shock up with way too much, installed on bike, removed the brass fitting, sat on bike and bounced a little bit to push out extra fluid. I suppose precautions were taken to avoid a mess and he reported good results.

I used synthetic ATF with 12.5 oz in mine and it sure made a big improvement, so much so that one of the other pairs with 10wt shock therapy are still capped in a box ready to go. I am lazy and happy with what is on the bike, someday I will doing work on the bike when on the lift and think to swap to see the difference.

I have a suspension "test loop" I call it right down the road I use. I will set the bike up one way and go ride my loop a few times, go home make a change and then go ride the loop to get impressions. This way there is fresh memories and I can tell the range of differences. When I was farting around with Progressives, emulators, oils weights and such I spent a lot of time on the loop.
