I find that the stealership factors in time for monkey-business, up-selling and general profiteering for everything they sell.

All joking aside, get different quotes if you are not able to do the work yourself. This is not a part you want to have fail post-install.

First off you don't mention what year/model bike ? Do you have TBW or throttle/idle cables? For 12.5" bars you should not need any extensions for your wires so that eliminates that issue. If you have TBW, I would highly suggest ordering the SE TBW assembly as it will be a much easier install than messing with the green plug on the stock unit. Cost is about $80 through on-line discount dealer. Well worth the cost in labor and aggravation. Depending on year of your bike, you will have to disconnect your wires from either the deutsch or molex connectors then run them through the bars and reconnect. Deutsch connectors are easier to work with IMO. Hopefully you have a service manual. I would be happy to help walk you through this project if you get stuck. Just send me a PM...

Thank you for the replys, I am still torn on which way to go. I called a local indie today and was quoted $1k, so that makes it a little more palatable. Basically breaks down to $350 or so in labor. I still might do it myself, but I am going to PM you guys on here to get the parts list. Thanks again for the responses!

1,200 - 1,500 around here with parts and labor with an indy doing the job. Most shops quote 6-8 hours of labor on this job.

I'm not sure I'd even let the HD dealership attempt this job. Seems like around here anyway the HD techs only want to deal with HD product installs.

That's the opposite of what my dealer told me. He said they never sell HD bars because they are only 1" and everyone wants 1.25" bars. So they end up selling 3rd party almost exclusively.

In casual conversation as I contemplated putting apes on my bike my dealer (where I purchased the bike) mentioned 8-10 hours of labor is customary. More if the bars have extreme angles like Yaffe Monkey Bars. My actual local dealership flat out refuses to install bars with extreme angles (not first hand information, FYI).

I never pursued a dealer install. I paid $565 for a package deal that included all the lines/cables/wire extensions. I paid another ~$100 for the SE throttle by wire assembly. Then I did the installation myself.

My first bike...I had the dealership do it. Dropped it off before I went on a deployment and picked it up finished when I got back. Cost around 1400 bucks. They supplied the bars. My new Street Glide, I'm ordering everything from BR's custom bars and doing it myself. It'll be Oct when I get home so I should have plenty of time to do it. Only thing I'm really concerned about is internally wiring the bars. I think Br will internally wire them for you for a price. If so I'm doing that.

Thing I always wondered about is if there's a mark up on the parts.... I have to think there is. They're going to try to make a dime any way they can.
