While having my cams installed,I was informed that my front motor mount is cracked, and needs to be replaced, how difficult is this to do??? I have replaced mounts on cars,is it a similar procedure?? Do I need a lift or can I do it on the ground? Thanks.

It is not difficult to do at all.You will need a MC jack. When you position the jack under the bike, put a wood shim between the front pad on the MC jack and your block so it raises the motor just a little (just enough to free the mount, like 1/8") when the motor mount bolt is loosened. That will help get the old one out and new one in. MAKE SURE you put the new motor mount in correct side up. They are different than the original style and unlike the original, the top is not marked.
I think the mount is around $40. HD charges around $100 for parts and labor if you don't want to mess with it.
Thanks Rocket. Let me ask you one more thing, since I don't have a lift, and don't have to move the motor much, would it be possible to lift the motor enough with some ratchet straps around the motor and the top of the frame??

A couple of comments on the front motor mount. The dealer found mine broken and installed the "new style". The bike shook my teeth when I was at stop lights. So I ordered a "velvaride" mount from Vthunder http://www.vthunder.com/Catalog/default.asp and installed it myself and am very happy with it after a thousand miles or so. I've got a motorcycle jack and agree this is the easiest way to go. If you don't have a MC jack, you could probably install the mount if you have a floor jack or sissor jack that will fit under the engine with the bike held in a verticle position. I wouldn't recommend trying to lift the engine from the frame. One last thing ... on my RK, I had to remove the bracket that attaches to the engine. The whole effort took me less than an hour.

BR,
I can understand trying to save some cash but I don't think I would try it that way. One way to look at it, if HD charges around $100 and you can buy the part for around $40, I think I would put the $60 savings toward a red MC jack from Sears. I think those go for around $80??? Then you would have the jack for other jobs too. Just a thought.
I have heard that motor mounts take a few miles to settle in so some intial vibration is normal.
