Some are programed to a mileage number given to the dealer at the time the order is placed. Other types can be programed by the owner one time.
A used speedometer cannot be reset.
I believe this is a Federal Law to prevent odometer fraud.
I have a couple of takeoff speedometers that will never be sold. Just think it is a bad practice.
used/reconditioned speedos are available ( I have a box of recons, which I do sell ).
it's up to the owner to tick the "not actual mileage" box on a title change.
nobody has ever called me because their bike had a 100,000 miles and a working speedo and they intended to commit fraud.
but I have seen dozens of speedos that packed it in prematurely- esp the old cable driven type.
- besides when looking at a vehicle, high mileage machines will have wear on the pedals etc. nicks and wear marks in the paint. tool marks on the fasteners.
it's pretty easy to tell a garage queen from a ridden bike.
you can find what you want on the used market, you will have to do due diligence to ensure you have the correct part number for your bike.
insist that the seller warranty the proper function- I give 60 days on the recon speedos i sell ( I only sell locally), never had one come back.
for your amusement, the speedo on my '53- notice how the numbers have fallen off the backside of the glass ( not for sale unless you want a $60000 bike with it)
